Resume Reviewer Guidelines

 Please feel free to use the steps and questions below as you review the application material:

Look at the resume/cv
  • What is your first impression of the resume/cv?
  • Is the formatting appealing?

Read through the resume/cv
  • Does the content make sense?
  • Does it flow well?
  • Are there any spelling or grammatical errors?
  • Anything else that might make you hesitate as a potential ‘hiring committee’ member?

Read the cover letter
  • Has the applicant demonstrated time spent writing and revising the cover letter?
  • Are there errors in spelling/grammar that detract from the cover letter?


If the applicant has attached a specific job description, please consider the following:

Read through the job description.
  • What traits, skills, experience do they seem to be looking for?

Read through the resume
  • Does the resume highlight the same traits, skills and experience that the job description calls for?

Read the cover letter
  • Does the cover letter draw connections to or vocabulary from the job description? Does it seem tailored to this particular posting?

Lastly:
  • Feel free to share any concerns/advice for the applicant. Put yourself in the position of “potential employer”; would you follow up with this applicant? Why or why not? What questions would you have for this applicant? Any skills you think they should work to develop?
  • Reviews in the form of bulleted lists of things that you like and suggestions for improvement are preferred over long-form ‘essay-style’ evaluation. If you would like more training or to see an example of reviewed material, don’t hesitate to let us know!
